Warszawa.

CalArts Workshops

1. JANIE GEISER - PROJECTED OBJECTS LABORATORY

TEATR STUDIO, 21.06 (18.00 - 21.00), 22.06 (12.00 - 15.00)

Projected Objects will be a hands-on laboratory exploring the intersection of objects, architecture, miniatures, bodies (human and artificial) with directed light and projection. We will use the building as our site, and create ephemeral site-specific installations and performances. Participating artists can work collaboratively or on solo projects.

Throughout the history of projection, from the magic lantern to contemporary digital video, from phantasmagoria shows to projections on skyscrapers, projection has intersected with objects to create ephemeral spaces, illusions, shifts of scale, and uncanny performances and installations. In this workshop, we will consider and explore these intersections of projected light and objects. We will start with the core elements of projection-without-projectors (using light, lenses, shadows, translucence) and move into digital projection, especially as it intersects with the material world. We will use the space itself, along with found or constructed objects. Participants are encouraged to bring interesting objects that can be the subjects of projection or the receptacles of projection. Other materials to bring could include transparent or translucent materials (prisms, lenses, magnifying glasses, fabrics, acetate, plastic bottles or packing materials, toys, images printed on acetate, 35mm slides, colored glass, etc), flashlights and cell phones, tablets, laptops, or various small lamps or projection

devices. We will play with live-feed and found video and create live installation/s exploring the ephemeral essence of projection as it engages with the artifice of tangible materials as and the human body.

Participants: Art students, experimental film students, professional artists and experimental filmmakers from Warsaw.

2. LEWIS KLAHR - COLLAGE NOVEL WORKSHOP

TEATR STUDIO, 22.06 (12.00 - 15.00)

A Hands on 2-D collage exploration in which participants work as a group to create a Collage Novel, think Max Ernst's Une Semaine de Bonté (1933 - 1934). I will supply all source materials -- comics, newspapers, magazines -- though participants are welcome to add to the mix. Our starting point will be the excerpting of a paperback pulp novel (written in English) via chance operations, with the finished collage text functioning as a script or map for our visual construction. Participants should bring their favorite cutting tool -- scissors or matte knife -- glue and paper tape will be provided. With our workshop time being limited, clearly the emphasis will be on process more than finished results!

Participants: Art students, experimental film students, professional artists and experimental filmmakers from Warsaw.

3. MARISSA CHIBAS AND DANIEL PASSER - ARCHETYPES WORKSHOP

TEATR STUDIO, 24.06 (12.00 - 15.00)

Daniel Passer and Marissa Chibas lead a workshop on Comedia and Film Noir. Daniel will lead the Comedia portion and Marissa the Noir. They will then combine efforts to center the workshop on mutual archetypes within both Noir and Comedia, and the students will explore integrating both in improv form.

Participants: Art students, experimental film students, professional artists and experimental filmmakers from Warsaw. Participants should bring their own clothes, reminiscent of Film Noir.

***

Lewis, Marissa and Daniel will not be presenting the workshop work publicly.

Janie's PROJECTED OBJECTS workshop is interested in presenting the final works in the windows of the Palace of Culture and Science as a part of the festival presentations.
